VALLEJO, Calif. — Who knew that Mare Island once harbored a CIA training site where covert mind-manipulation experiments took place? Well, actually, it didn’t. But in “Expunged,” a just-published book by a former Solano County Fair general manager, the story resolution happens at a shuttered naval shipbuilding base at the Bay’s northern tip where the antagonist operates a CIA training site, modeled on Mare Island.

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The 1982 murder of Velma Collins was a case that stuck with writer Stephen Pierce for decades, so much so that he’s written a series inspired by it. “Expunged” the second novel in the series, will be released Aug. 27.
New book from former Daily Republic writer arrives Wednesday
FAIRFIELD, Calif. — A teenage courtroom experience seeds the plot for the second book in a suspense thriller series about Clark Solo, a newspaper reporter who can’t seem to keep the headlines from jumping off the front page and inserting him into their stories. “Expunged,” from former Solano County resident and journalist Stephen Pierce will be released Wednesday on Amazon in paperback and e-book formats. The new novel brings to life a couple of seemingly innocuous bits from the initial book in the series, “Invisible Defense.” The first being Tory Avlah, a character inspired by a criminal trial Pierce observed during the summer between his junior and senior years in high school.
Author comes ‘home’ for debut book, set in Rio Vista
FAIRFIELD, Calif. — A new romance thriller, Invisible Defense, reveals part of its mystery in the tranquil setting of an old Victorian farmhouse hidden in the windmill-dotted hills of rural Rio Vista. Former longtime Solano County resident Stephen Pierce chose the hamlet along the Sacramento River for his debut novel because its picturesque setting was so vivid in his mind.
